Grandy was born in Munich, Germany in 1980 to German-Japanese parents. After serving as General Music Director of the Theater und Orchester Heidelberg for eight years, he is now Chief Conductor of the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra (Sakkyo) from 2025, the encounter started in 2020 opera "Carmen." Grandy collaborated with major orchestras around the world, including the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse. He has also appeared regularly at the Dresden State Opera and other venues, and has gained international acclaim for his passionate and spirited musical interpretations in both opera and symphony. Grandy was recently appointed Chief Conductor and designated Artistic Director of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, the tenure to begin within the 2026/2027 season.
Born in Germany. Mentored by the 20th century legendary Artist Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Appl describes the partnership as an ‘invaluable and a hugely formative influence. He [Fischer-Dieskau] is an inspiration – someone who is always searching and seeking a deeper understanding of music and of life. He was a role model for how to prosper as an artist, never just delivering, but each time creating.’ An established recitalist, Appl appeared in Ravinia, Rheingau, Schleswig Holstein, Edinburgh, Heidelberg Frühling and Oxford International festivals and in prestigious halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall (USA) and Wigmore Hall (UK), as well as captivating audiences with orchestras conducted by maestros such as Klaus Mäkelä, Andrew Manze and Ton Koopman. In 2018, he made his debut in Japan with the NHK Symphony Orchestra conducted by Paavo Järvi and has also appeared in "Suntory 10,000 Ninth" and "Sound Stage".
